Globally, it’s very cool to be Nigerian right now, as we are currently the pop culture hub of Africa. Nigerian musicians, fashion designers, actors and more are being celebrated internationally, and there are several eyes looking in and tapping into our culture.

So, it comes as no surprise that Idris Elba plays a Nigerian in the latest Netflix original show, Turn Up Charlie.

In the comedy, Elba plays Charlie Ayo, a DJ who gets a chance to jumpstart his career when he reconnects with a childhood friend. He gets a chance to work alongside David’s famous DJ wife, however, he ends up being a manny (male nanny) to their precocious daughter.

Throughout the series, Charlie’s parents are back home in Nigeria, so he lives with his old-school aunt, Lydia, who has no tolerance for him and his nonsense. Much like typical Nigerian aunt’s are, she’s brash, abrasive and absolutely hilarious.

While Aunt Lydia’s Nigerian accent could have been a lot better — especially if they had just cast an actual Nigerian actress in the role — the storyline is sweet and lighthearted, and it’s perfect for a weekend binge session.
