Bundesliga International, a subsidiary of the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga, has agreed a new three-year deal with CANAL+ to broadcast Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matches in French language to its subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa.

Beginning next month, from the launch of the 2020-21 season and for the next three seasons, CANAL+SPORT will be the home of the Bundesliga for French-speaking fans. Viewers will be able to enjoy world-class football including the German Supercup, relegation play-off matches and high-octane derbies that take place throughout the season.

Jacques du Puy, Chairman of CANAL+ International, said: “Our subscribers in Africa are big football fans, and we are keen to offer them increasingly attractive packages. We are delighted to now be able to welcome the Bundesliga into the fold – it is a fantastic championship, a legendary classic that never ceases to innovate and one that was missing from our European catalogue.”

Robert Klein, Bundesliga International CEO, said: “For the next three years, CANAL+ and the Bundesliga will work together to bring fans closer to German football in Africa. We know that African football fans are incredibly passionate about football, which fits perfectly with our mantra of delivering ‘Football As Its Meant To Be’. Together with our partners in the region, we want to convey this message to Africa and further grow our local fanbase.”

The Bundesliga continues to be a great platform for African-born players succeeding on the world stage. More than 20 African players compete in the top tier of German football, including FC Schalke 04’s Salif Sané, TSG Hoffenheim’s Diadie Samassékou, and Edmond Tapsoba from Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

In addition, over 50 active Bundesliga players have African roots, such as FC Bayern München’s Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry, as well as RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, which provides more great opportunities for locally relevant storytelling about the Bundesliga on CANAL+.
