Discover Sons Of Sonix, The British-Nigerian Duo Looking To Spread Afropop To The World

Just last week, Kida Kudz released another infectious single, “Jiggy Bop”, which saw him unveil even more of his rap range than we had heard on his previous hits, “Issa Vibe” and “Again”.

While Kid Kudz’s melodic delivery certainly made the song extra catchy, it’s the fantastic production work, particularly its mystical beat, that pushed the track over the edge, and that’s all thanks to British-Nigerian production duo, Sons of Sonix.

First starting out in the church, Mo-Keyz and Mikey found themselves intrigued by the melodies, the rhythms, the vocals and all the various aspects of the music they produced, so much so that they went on to focus on music through their school years.

Becoming lifetime students of music, the duo didn’t stop at just making beats, they learned how to produce, then how to write songs, then they mastered the art of sound engineering, and they are still learning and progressing.

With their vast music-making abilities, Sons of Sonix have grown to be one of the most revered producers in the London music scene, working with a few notable British rappers, such as Stormzy, Wretch 32 and Chipmunk.

Refusing to box themselves in when it comes to creating music — they’ve made hip-hop tracks, afropop bops, grime hits and even a K-pop song — Sons of Sonix have now left their London base for an exciting stint in Los Angeles.

Their move to America was greatly inspired by Mo-Keyz’s brother, Harmony Samuels — who won a Grammy for his production work on Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E, and has scored films such as For Colored Girls and the Think Like A Man series.

Since settling in LA, they’ve worked with stars like Ariana Grande, Ty Dolla $ign and French Montana. They also recently teamed up with Jennifer Lopez for her proposed comeback track, “Medicine”, which has been praised by critics.

Although they’re both of Nigerian descent, Mo-Keyz and Mikey had never been to the continent, that is until their recent writing camp, powered by Universal Music Group, during which they worked with acts signed to Universal Nigeria, like the winner of The Voice Nigeria’s second season, Idyl.

Given the multiple collaborations S.O.S have with Kida Kudz, it would be odd if their time in Nigeria didn’t birth another track. The single, which S.O.S tease will be released imminently, is set to feature Teni, and we fully expect it to be another banger from the talented hitmakers.

Sons of Sonix have a twofold motive for their inescapable return back home: To give the next generation of Nigerian musicians exposure, and to use their international platform to popularise the Nigerian sound.

Speaking with Okay Africa about their mission to spread Nigerian music to the world, Mo-Keyz states:

“I think it’s just about reinventing ourselves. In order for the Nigerian sound to constantly remain pivotal and potent in our music, we have to constantly find ways to share it…

That’s how you keep something fresh. If you can keep finding ways to take the African sound and make it sound fresh and new, it will always be here.”

Until then, listen to Kida Kudz’s impressive “Jiggy Bop” below:
