Governor Kayode Fayemi and Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum

The Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, has moved against the Control of Infectious Diseases Bill, 2020 currently before the National Assembly, asking the lawmakers to suspend hearing on the bill as they were not carried along.

The 36 State governors said all activities on the bill must be halted immediately.

Speaking at their 8th COVID-19 teleconference, the governors expressed discomfort that they were not consulted on the Bill despite being at the forefront of efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

NGF’s spokesman, Abdulrazague Bello-Barkindo, in a statement said the governors raised concern with the lack of consultation with State Governments, who were at the forefront of the epidemic.

He said the forum resolved that the Bill should be stepped down until an appropriate consultative process was held, including a public hearing to gather public opinion and concerns.
