There is pandemonium at Lugbe along airport road Abuja men of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) engaged some angry protesting youths who are planning to burn down a Shoprite store in Lugbe, Abuja on Wednesday, September 4, 2019.
The violent demonstration was in reaction to the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa over the past few days.
When police officers stopped protesters from gaining access to the Shoprite store in Abuja on Wednesday, the mob burnt tyres along the road. A billboard was also set on fire by the protesters.
The tire-burning youths were tear-gassed by policemen in a bid to foil their attempt to set the mall ablaze.
Meanwhile, the irate protesters have set a bonfire on the road, vowing not to leave the area as more armed policemen were deployed to the area to restore order.
Security was also beefed up at the Jabi Mall in Abuja and security checks done on people who entered the mall which also houses a Shoprite store.
