Nonso Amadi Shares Track-By-Track Breakdown Of New EP, ‘Free’

Last Friday was a phenomenal day for Nigerian music, with a plethora of amazing new releases littering our airwaves. One of the unequivocal standouts was Nonso Amadi’s Free, an impressive body of work that we believe will take the singer to the next level of his career. 

On the stunning six-track EP, which features Simi and Mr Eazi, Nonso Amadi takes his fans on a journey through all the different phases of his relationship — from needing his space, to begging his partner to show him off a little bit more.

Given the multiple themes and layers Nonso Amadi explores on Free, we at Konbini decided to ask the artist for more insight into the messages he hopes to convey, and he came through with an exclusive track-by-track breakdown of the EP.

“Never”

“Never” is me addressing some criticism I had earlier in the year. I talk about how I have tried to be nothing but a saint in the game, but somehow life finds a way to attract unwanted problems.

“Better” ft. Simi

“Better” gives some background on how I met the girl in question. She is overprotected by her folks, and I’ve had my eye on her for some time. On the track, I ask for a chance to prove my worth, and I finally gain it with Simi’s approval on her verse.

“Free”

Spending every day with your girl can feel sticky sometimes — like you lose a little something when you’re over-familiarised. This song addresses that and my request for some space, so we can miss each other again. There is always a need to be free.

“No Crime”

A hand-in-hand tune with track 2, “Better”, on “No Crime”, I  ask for her to give me a chance, saying there’s no crime in doing so. Telling her friends about me wouldn’t hurt.

“Go Outside” ft. Mr Eazi

“Go Outside” is a somewhat fictionalised message of what the over-demand for a growing celebrity feels like. Everywhere I go, people request my presence, and I end up having only a stressed-out version of myself to offer. It made sense to have Eazi on the tune to solidify the star status message.

“What Makes You Sure?”

Asking for freedom in a relationship can lead to many suspicions, including chances of you seeing someone else. On “What Makes You Sure?” I confront her on how sure she is about these suspicions.
