President-elect jets out for rest, lesser hajj, says aide

Ahead of his inauguration on May 29, President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu left the country last night to take some rest and plan his incoming administration’s transition programme.

He will also use the period to participate in this year’s lesser Hajj, the Umrah, and fasting in the month of Ramadan.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, said Tinubu “left the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Ikeja for Europe Tuesday night after the exhaustive campaign and election season”.

The statement added: “The President-elect decided to take a break after the hectic campaign and election season to rest in Paris (France) and London (United Kingdom), preparatory to going to Saudi Arabia for Umrah (Lesser Hajj) and the Ramadan fasting that begins Thursday.

“While away, the President-elect will also use the opportunity to plan his transition programme.

“He is expected back in the country soon.”

An online platform had reported that the President-elect was flown abroad as a result of ill health.

Rahman debunked the report, saying it was necessary to “enjoin the media to stop publishing rumours and unsubstantiated claims and to always seek clarifications from our office”.
