Next of kin usually refers to a person’s closest living relative. Individuals who count as next of kin include those with a blood relation, such as children, or those with a legal standing, such as spouses or adopted children. A person’s next of kin often take precedence over others in inheritance cases, especially when a will is not established.

According to Timi Dakolo, some next of kin have no regard for anyone’s hard work as they could waste the money as they dey so pleases.
He wrote in pidgin, “Try Dey chop your money o, cos these people called next of kin fit carry your hard work go dey do money ain’t a thing, take whatever you like.”
