  • IBB: Journalists should ignore those preaching hate, disunity

  • President felicitates ex-military leader at 81

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has urged Nigerians to be patient with each other and continue to pray for the peace and progress of the nation.

He urged journalists to ignore politicians and other people who preach hate and disunity as election campaigns towards the 2023 general election become more intense.

Addressing reporters ahead of today’s celebration of his 81st birthday, Babangida said Nigerians should not give up hope for an end to the challenges bedevilling the country.

Sounding spiritual, he said: “This too shall pass.

“I plead with us to be patient with one another and be prayerful. We need to continue to sensitise people on how to live in peace and harmony.”

Babangida urged Nigerians to continue to have faith in the unity of the country and remain resolute that Nigeria will get better.

Addressing reporters, the former military leader noted that if the media and journalists ignore the spreaders of hate, they would not have a platform to pass their messages to anyone.

“You are doing enough to promote the unity of the country. You can change the psychic of Nigerians. I implore you to ignore those that preach hate and disunity. Ignore them and don’t bother about them,” he said.

According to him, the media can shape how Nigerians behave, and they need to put in more efforts to change the national narrative.

“You can only do this through objective reportage and I like the debate that is ongoing in the media, it is giving the people the insight that they need to see. What the media is doing now is very good,” Babangida said.

Praising God for seeing him through the years, the elder statesman stressed that patience is a virtue that has shaped him in the journey of life while faith has kept him through everything.

He added: “I give thanks to God for keeping me through these years. The lessons I have learnt over the years that have shaped me are patience and respect for every human being. Nigerians should learn to imbibe these virtues.”

Also, President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday celebrated General Babangida on his 81st birthday anniversary.

A statement in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said: “President Buhari sends best wishes to former military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on his 81st birthday, August 17, 2022.

“President Buhari joins family, friends and associates of the former leader in celebrating another year, heralded by God’s benevolence and mercies.

“The President notes the historical role of the former military President in shaping the political and economic development of the country, and his counsels to upcoming political leaders.

“President Buhari prays for longer life, good health and strength for the octogenarian,” the statement said.
