Says Army has allowed good reason to prevail
Akeredolu said the security personnel signed away their lives, comfort and family bond to defend the territorial integrity of the country, adding that they sometimes pay the supreme price.
The governor noted that the celebration is to honour the departed heroes and appreciate the living ones.
He solicited generous support for the widows and dependants of the fallen heroes, as well as those who are still alive, but physically-challenged.
he Commander, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Brig-Gen. Yakubu Yahaya, was represented at the church service by his Chief of Staff, Charles Zebere.
The Bishop of Ondo Diocese (Anglican Communion), Stephen Oni, earlier in his sermon, entitled ‘Remember me, oh God, and my deeds’, said “it is always good to remember those who fought for peace and unity of the country,” just as he appreciated God for keeping the country together amid challenges.
Oni stressed the need to restructure the country to address various agitations, even as he called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the amended Electoral Act into law in the interest of the nation.
FOLLOWING the return of the army to correctional centres across Ondo, Governor Akeredolu has said the military authorities have allowed good reasoning to prevail in the interest of the people.
Akeredolu had deployed Amotekun personnel to the correctional centres following the withdrawal of the army.
Reasons for their withdrawal from the centres and checkpoints remained unknown.
The governor had raised alarm after their withdrawal, last week, lamenting that their action would induce jailbreaks. He wondered why soldiers would be withdrawn from prisons, which belong to the Federal Government.
However, a statement issued weekend by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, noted that Akeredolu received notice of the return of army personnel to correctional centres in the state.
The statement reads: “Governor Akeredolu, who described the return as a welcome development, said the Nigerian Army has allowed good reasoning to prevail in the interest of the people. He noted that the initial withdrawal of the officers from the correctional centres was an aberration and an undue security risk.
“We note the return of soldiers to the correctional centres as concerting. The security of life and property remains an onerous task that must be carried out without hesitation or sentiment.”
