Salaudeen Waliu, the final-year student at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), who was said to have battered a female lecturer identified as Rahmat Zakariyau, has explained the reasons for his action.
Waliu was alleged to have attacked the lecturer in her office and beat her to coma because she refused to help him following his failure to do the mandatory students’ industrial Work experience scheme (SIWES).
According to Punch, Waliu opened up on the series of events that prompted his actions.
He claimed he had gone to the office of the female lecturer to beg her to help wave the mandatory SIWES course which he missed due to unforeseen circumstances.
Waliu said he met Zakariyau numerous times but it all ended with negative responses before the assault happened.
Waliu claimed that “months before the last Thursday incident, he was arrested and locked up for two months, thereby warranting his inability to attend SIWES duties.”
He said a mob meted out jungle justice on him and handed him over to the police who kept him for two months.
The final-year student said he approached Zakariyau to explain his ordeal and seek help but the lecturer refused, asking him to join the next set which would result in an extra year.
”I got angry. I don’t know what came over me. I started arguing and she told me to leave her office. I told her if I don’t leave, what is she going to do? She threw a mug at me which injured me and I started beating her,” he said.
“I dragged her out and she ran. I chased and kept beating her before people came. I tried to run but was later caught by the school security.”
