The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has disclosed that the commission recorded a total of 2,471 deaths and 5,320 road crashes within the first half of 2021.

FRSC Corps Marshal Boboye Oyeyemi, disclosed this in Owerri on Friday during the flag-off of Ember month safety campaign titled “Maintain Safety Speed, Avoid Night Travels and Enjoy Quality Road Experience.”

Oyeyemi, represented by the Zonal Commanding Officer RS9HQ Enugu, Owoimaha Udoma said road crashes does not have link to ‘Ember Months’, but poor attitude of driving.

“Don’t blame road crashes on blood sucking demons on the highway, but as a result of overspending and non- adherence to other traffic rules.

“Nigerians must avoid night journeys at all cost and also make preparations including safety precautions.

Oyeyemi said during ‘Ember Months’, motorists tend to double their hustle, which he said often leads to abandoning the virtue of safety for quick money.

He said the corps was working seriously to reduce the road crash index in the country, but however urged Nigerians to support the move.

The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma represented by the Deputy Governor, Placid Njoku, urged road users to avoid night journeys and adhere to road traffic rules.

“By way of support to road safety management, every keen observer of events in Imo will see the breathtaking paradigms the present administration has taken to demonstrate its commitment”, he said.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Imo Mr Joshua Odekanye said night travel poses higher security risk for travelers as well as lack of possible help in case of an accident.

“It is no longer hearsay that the end of the year is usually associated with higher vehicular and human travels across the country, which is often confronted with the horrors of road crashes.”
