President Muhammadu Buhari assured the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that Nigeria is working to reverse the severe trend of biodiversity loss.

He spoke on Wednesday in a video message to an hybrid High-Level event tagged “Transformative Actions for Nature and People” on the margins of the 76th Session of UNGA.

Aside from championing regional and inter-regional cooperation towards addressing the scourge, the President outlined other measures.

Buhari listed expansion of protected areas, including the establishment of 10 new National Parks across Nigeria; and creation of Marine Protected Areas pursuant to the 30X30 Agenda of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).

He mentioned the domestication of relevant international agreements, and laws/policies for the protection and conservation of biodiversity.

The President added that partnerships with development partners, and increased investments in a climate-positive economy for sustainable environment and land use practices were also being worked on.

Buhari thanked President of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado Quesada whose country currently chairs the High Ambition Coalition for Nature & People (HAC). Nigeria is a member and co-chair.
