An unidentified voter was shot dead by suspected thugs at the ongoing State House of Assembly by-election in Isoko South Constituency I, Delta State.
An eyewitness who don’t want his name in print told journalists that the unlucky voter was gunned down at about 3:15 pm when armed thugs invaded polling unit 5 of Irri Ward 11 to steal ballot boxes before security operatives were mobilized to the scene to restore peace.
The eyewitness stated further that the gunmen armed with AK47 riffles shot intermittently in the air to scare away voters and eventual the victim was shot.
Meanwhile, the by-election commenced in earnest as voting materials were already distributed by the Independent National Electoral Commission to most units visited in the local government headquarter, Oleh as at 3 pm on Friday.
The Presiding Officer of Unit 16, Akeredolu Mercy who spoke with our correspondence however affirmed the early arrival of materials, adding that for the particular unit, accreditation started at exactly 8.30 am though the turnout of voters was still very low as at press time.
At unit 14, Irri ward 11, one of the prominent sons of the Irri community, Hon Goddey Igorigo who spoke with newsmen commended the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission in ensuring that materials were distributed on time to collation centres for onward movement to polling units.
He added that the massive turnout of voters who queued up and were eager to be accredited and cast their votes was a result of the intensive campaign strategies employed by the PDP ahead of the election.
While speaking with newsmen at his country in Uro-Irri community after casting his vote at his unit, the Director-General of the PDP campaign organisation for the Isoko South Constituency 1, State House of Assembly by-election, Sir Constantine Ikpokpo described the election as very interesting adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission performance was exceptional and impressive.
According to him, “the Independent National Electoral Commission has tried two things differently, first of all, materials came two days before the election and as at 2 pm the following day, the five rack centres were beehives of activities.
In a brief chat with Chief Ross Uredi at Irri ward 11, unit 6, Idheze, stated that the system might be having failures here and there but the voters should exercise patience with the process in order to cast their votes.
He applauded the turnout of voters and the general conduct of the election which he noted as free and fair, devoid of violence and one of the most credible elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in recent times.
