Major Christopher Datong, the military officer abducted by bandits at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Afaka, Kaduna State, is still alive, according to a family source.

Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, gunmen stormed the academy’s Afaka barracks, killing two soldiers identified as Lieutenant Commodore Wulah and Flight Lieutenant Okoronwo.

They also kidnapped Datong and demanded N200 million from military authorities to release him.

There were widespread allegations on Tuesday night that the Major’s lifeless body had been discovered, with insinuations that he had been killed by terrorists.

The officer’s family, however, told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that he had not been slain and that he was still alive.

“He is still alive. I can confirm it to you,” the source said.
