A new indigenous airline, Green Africa, has secured its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC), a requirement for the commencement of flight operation.
Daily Trust reports that the airline had planned to start operations on June 24 and had even sold tickets to many passengers but the scheduled commencement was deferred because the AOC from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) was not ready.
But the NCAA presented the AOC to the airline on Monday with the airline announcing it would commence “soft launch of flight schedule immediately.”
In a statement, the airline said its inaugural commercial flight would take off on Thursday, 12th August 2021.
The entry of Green Africa has added to the growing number of scheduled flights with increased choices for air passengers.
NCAA’s Director of Airworthiness Standards, Engr. Kayode Ajiboye presented the certificate to the airline on behalf of the DG, Capt. Musa Nuhu.
With the certificate, Green Africa is able to commence operations in accordance with its initial route network unveiled earlier in June.
Speaking on the issuance of the AOC to Green Africa, Capt. Musa Nuhu said, “We at the NCAA are impressed with Green Africa’s effort and commitment to safely connect many more people across the country and we look forward to the positive contribution that the new airline will bring to the Nigerian aviation industry.”
Founder of the airline, Babawande Afolabi, said, “This is a watershed moment in our journey to use the power of air travel to create a better future. Thanks to the NCAA, the gTeam, our investors and other stakeholders, Green Africa is now set to start serving customers.”
Customers can now make bookings for flights across Green Africa’s route network.
It would be recalled that the airline had in May commenced flight tickets sales with offerings as low as N16,500, saying cities to be served are Lagos (LOS) connecting Akure (AKR), Ilorin (ILR), Abuja (ABV), Owerri (QOW), Port Harcourt (PHC) and Enugu (ENU).
