Grace Bent, former senator representing Adamawa south, has threatened a lawsuit against Precious Chikwendu, estranged wife of Femi Fani-Kayode, ex-aviation minister, over alleged defamation.

Fani-Kayode and Chikwendu’s marriage hit the rock in 2020 over her domestic violence claim and the ex-minister’s counter-claim of infidelity.

They have been in a heated tussle for the custody of their children — Aragorn, Ragnar, Aiden, and Liam — since the marriage crashed.

Precious had earlier claimed that Bent was after her life. She had also alleged that the former senator was running errands for Fani-Kayode to deny her custody of her children.

But in a statement on Thursday, Bent, who is a long-time associate of the ex-minister, described the allegation by Precious as a “very weighty” one which carries “assassination tendencies and intendment”.

In the statement signed by Timothy Williams, her spokesperson, she said she had swiftly reported the matter to the police for investigation.

“This publication, which was at the behest of one Precious Chikwendu has been making rounds on the internet and diverse social media platforms,” the ex-senator said.

“As a civil and law abiding citizen of Nigeria, the distinguished senator immediately reported the matter to the police, and investigation is ongoing.

“For the records, a swift report had to be made to the relevant enforcement agency, because the publication alleged that the distinguished senator was after the life of Precious Chikwendu.

“This is a very weighty allegation of assassination tendencies and intendment.

“The publication also alleged that Senator Grace Bent was out to pervert the course of justice by making efforts at muscling Ms. Precious Chikwendu to abandon her child custody suit.”

Bent described the claims by Chikwendu that she and Fani-Kayode plan to jointly and “abusively activate the machineries of enforcement agencies” against her as “false”.

The ex-senator added that she has consulted with her lawyers and won’t hesitate to seek redress in law and equity for what she termed “the wrongs” meted against her.
