No fewer than 30 persons have been confirmed dead due to infection believed to be cholera in parts of Jigawa State. Confirming the fatality yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Salisu Mu’azu, said the deaths were from about 2,000 patients that contracted the disease.

He directed the release of drugs at three health centres in Hadejia, Dutse and Ringim local councils to enable the victims get immediate free medical attention.

Mu’azu said other agencies such as United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Doctors Without Borders, known as Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) had indicated readiness to partner with the state to stop the scourge from further spread.

Earlier, the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) task force in the state had briefed newsmen that the state would not allow any Durbar celebration during the Sallah festivities.

The permanent secretary said the decision followed a directive from the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 against the Delta variant of the virulent pandemic.

He said the government directed the continued observance of all COVID-19 safety protocols, with the hope that the Delta variant might not have a devastating effect on the people.
