Just In: NLC to resume showdown in Kaduna as negotiation with El-Rufai suffers setback

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says it is set to resume mass action in Kaduna State.

President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba, disclosed this to journalists in Abuja shortly after an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.

He said the congress was forced to take the decision after exhausting all avenues to resolve the issue amicably.

Wabba said part of their efforts was writing letters to President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, but the actions failed to yield any positive results.

He said union members across the country have been mobilised to resume the suspended mass action.

Wabba said the action was taken after Governor Nasir El-Rufai refused to honour the last Memorandum of Action.

He said, “It is on record that between 31st of March and 1st April, 2021, thousands of workers have been laid off from the unified Local Government systems in Kaduna State.

“Also affected are workers in the State Primary Health Care agency, and workers in KSMC. Owing to the above grievous infractions, and continued provocation by the Kaduna State government against workers in the State, and despite the fact that we have also complained formally to the Federal Government through the President, we have also complained formally to the Federal Ministry of Labour on the non-adherence to the MoU, NEC has resolved as follows:

“That the earlier decision of the National Executive Council to withdraw all services and protest this neo-liberalism and extreme right-wing policies should take effect without further delay, and that the mobilisation of all our state councils and all affiliates should take place immediately and that all Employers of Labour should be put on notice as required by our extant laws.”
