On Monday, the Lagos House of Assembly examined and revised a section of the state’s Independent Electoral Commission statute (LASIEC).

The legislature made changes to the statute by adding a paragraph to Section 2.

The newly inserted subsection 5 empowers the Governor of the State to prolong the commission’s term due to exigencies.

The Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, informed his colleagues that the altercation was legal.

Victor Akande, Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, also explained the repeal.

According to Akande, the goal is to fill the gap that may arise between the expiration of the commission’s term and the Governor’s appointment of new members.

“The bill is just for a singular amendment or a fraction of the law and the major issue is that it is seeking for us to give the Governor a leverage in case of scarcity of time.”

The amendment, according to Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa 2), provides that the House can intervene if the commission’s term is extended for whatever reason.

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, indicated that the portion of the statute was changed due to time constraints.

A legal extension of the commission’s members, according to Obasa, would let them effectively conclude the elections with the backing of the law.

He claimed that an additional six months, as indicated by the law, was excessively long given that the term is only intended to perfect new appointments.

Obas instructed the Clerk of the House, Olalekan Onafeko, to deliver a clean copy of the bill to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his approval.
