FG opens account on new social media platform

Days after suspending Twitter operations in Nigeria, the federal government has registered on social media platform from a developing nation.

The face-off between Nigeria and Twitter began last Friday when President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet was deleted and tweets by Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, were spared.

The suspension is indefinite. And the federal government has ordered anybody who access Twitter to be prosecuted—just as it directed all broadcast media organisations in Nigeria to stop using the platform.

On its verified handled on the new microblogging platform, the federal government has garnered close to 7000 followers.

The verified account is ‘Government of Nigeria’ @nigeriagov.

Koo co-founder and CEO, Aprameya Radhakrishna, shared a post on his account @aprameya, about Nigerian government’s presence on Koo.

“The official handle of the government of Nigeria is now on Koo!”

Radhakrishma said the Indian microblogging and social networking service is working to enable local Nigerian languages on its app.

“Koo is available in Nigeria. We’re thinking of enabling the local languages there too. What say?” He also shared a screenshot of the languages spoken in Nigeria.

Koo, formerly Ku Koo KU is based in Bengaluru, India, was developed by Aprameya Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka in 2020.

The app is currently valued at over $100 million.
