The Minster of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has said the Federal Government will enforce the ‘no work, no pay’ on the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) who are currently on strike in the nation.
The Minister issued the warning to the striking doctors on Friday, during an interview on Channels Television Politics Today Programme.
“By Tuesday, I will invite them back. If they become recalcitrant, there are other things I can do. There are weapons in the Labour Laws, I will invoke them. There is no work, no pay
“The employers have a role also to keep their business afloat, to keep patients alive. They can employ local doctors. We won’t get there but if we are going to stick there, we will use that stick.”
Mr Ngige explained that the current hazard allowance that was fixed in 1992 for just #5000 is still very valid and fair for the medical staff.
He however said that the Federal Government would review that amount in the next five weeks for an amount the Minister did not disclose during the interview.
He noted that former president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr Francis Adedayo Faduyile had once pointed the attention of the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to the amount of the current hazard allowance, describing it as embarrassing and inhuman.
“The new hazard allowance will be done in the next five weeks. It is in the Memorandum of Action that we signed. Immediately after the Easter break, I will convene a meeting to look at it holistically.”
The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) began an indefinite strike on Thursday to protest against the failure of the Federal Government in fulfilling their duties.
