The Minister of Communications and Digital Strategy, Isa Pantami, has said citizens who are yet to register for their National Identification Number (NIN) risk jail term.
Mr Pantami issued the threat on Thursday during a press briefing at the statehouse.
He disclosed that as of March 31, 2021, 51 million Nigerians have registered for their NIN.
“There are 189 million registered subscriber identification module (SIM) cards in the country.”
He stressed that of this figure, only 150 million have complete registrations while others have problems of improper registration.
He said owning a SIM card is optional, but the NIN is mandatory.
The minister, however, warned that those yet to obtain their NIN risk seven or 14 years imprisonment as stipulated by the Nigerian constitution
