Nigerians on social media have slammed Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, for giving a plot of land and cash to Burna Boy as an appreciation for winning the Grammy Awards.

BREAKINGTIMES had reported that Wike gave Burnaboy the gift while welcoming him and his parents at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Governor Wike had described the Grammy award-winning Afrobeat singer, as the pride of the state and also promised to give artistes who performed at Burna’s Homecoming Concert in Rivers State N10 million each.

Reacting to the development, some Nigerians took to Twitter t condemned the action, accusing the governor of wasteful spending while still owing pensioners in the state. They also took a swipe at Burnaboy for accepting the gift.

Below are some comments BREAKINGTIMES gathered on Twitter:

@Tife_fabunmi wrote, “It’s not the gift that Wike gave Burna and other artistes that is making people complain, it’s the fact that there are so many workers/pensioners who are yet to be paid their salary/pension for months in the same state and he was till able to gift such huge amount.”

@FS_Yusuf_ said “Wike gifting 10 million Naira to Burna boy who is already a millionaire is very wrong. Now safe me that defence that he could possibly do it from his personal pocket. Fuck it! We know our politicians. If at this stage we can’t call black, black then we are deceiving ourselves.”

@firstdoctor: “Burna Boy made Rivers State proud winning a Grammy. No doubt..But the impulsive N10m each for artists at his homecoming concert by Wike, who owes teachers’ salaries, is a big insult.Reminds me of emperors who threw parties for their sons while their labourers died of hunger.”
