THE Senate on Tuesday started a fresh move to save the Nigeria Postal Service from a total collapse by initiating a new law to restructure the agency.

Tagged, ‘A bill for an Act to repeal the Nigerian Postal Service Act Cap N127 LFN 2004, the proposed legislation was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The bill is seeking the establishment of the Nigeria Postal Commission to make comprehensive provisions for the development and regulation of postal services and other related matters.

Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, who seconded the bill, said the objective was to bring the Nigerian Postal Service to the realities of the 21st century and the information age.

Senator Barau Jibrin said the bill aimed at modernising the NPS by bringing in ICT.

He said, “We should support this Bill so that it can go a long way in operating like what we see in other climes. I think it is important to unbundle Nigerian Postal Service to allow modernity to come in place by bringing in ICT so that things will flow.”

Senator Solomon Adeola said, “Our postal service can be a major revenue contribution but we have a postal service that can no longer function. This is another call to service for us as Senators that we must holistically ensure we have a postal service that can compete with other postal services across the globe.”

The bill was read the second time and referred to the Committee on Communications to report back within four weeks.
