Following the death of a community youth leader, Mr Osaheni Osadolor, the speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, has been accused of murder by members of Obagie Uwa-Fiokun Community in Ovia North East Local government area, Edo State.
According to the leader of the protesters, Prince John Eweka who spoke on behalf of the Enogie (Duke) of the community, His Royal Highness, Ogbeide Asonworiri Eweka Uwa-Fiokun, the deceased as leader of the youths was in charge of boundaries between the community and other neighbouring communities in the area.
They alleged he was brutally murdered by thugs suspected to have been sponsored by the speaker of Edo State House of Assembly over a land dispute.
“The speaker led some fierce-looking thugs to disrupt activities in the community and ordered his security details to be shooting sporadically to disperse the community people”.
A younger brother of the deceased, Osamwenyobor Osadolor who was part of the protesters carrying different placards explained that his brother now deceased called him that some persons, led by the speaker came to attack him in the community, urging him to call the attention of security agents to come to his aid but unfortunately, it yielded no positive result.
“We want the Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki and our Royal father the Oba of Benin to intervene in this issue and call the speaker to order before it is late”
Addressing the protesters at the main gate of the Edo State Government House, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP, Miller Dantawaye who represented the state commissioner of police, Phillip Ogbadu told the indigenes that the command under the new commissioner will do the needful in unravelling those behind the death of late Osaheni.
“The police would embark on proper investigation and take appropriate action to dispense justice” he added.
Reacting to the allegation, Hon Marcus Onobun denied owning any land or visiting the said community in question.
“People have been calling me concerning this issue, I don’t have any land in that community”
