CCTV Didn’t Capture Lekki Shooting, The Cameras Stopped Recording By 8pm – LCC Boss 1

The Managing Director of the LCC, Abayomi Omomuwa, stated this on Tuesday when he appeared before the Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by the Lagos State Government to probe the Lekki shootings.

KanyiDaily had reported how Nigerian Soldiers opened fire on peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate, killing unconfirmed number of person and injuring so many others on Tuesday night, October 21, 2020.

Last week during an interview with CCN, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had revealed that the CCTV camera at Lekki Toll Gate was not removed before the the shooting of #EndSARS protesters.

Governor Sanwo-olu said the security cameras captured the tragic incident which shows Nigerian soldiers shooting unarmed protesters at Lekki Toll Gate.

“From the footage that we could see, it seems to be…there would be men in military uniform, who should be Nigerian Army or something,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that, “Yes, they were there. That’s what the footage shows,” after the anchor pressurized him further to reveal those behind the shooting incident.

But when he appeared before the panel on Tuesday, the LCC Boss, Omomuw said the surveillance camera stopped working at 8pm on that very night.

“The surveillance camera didn’t capture the shooting. It stopped recording around 8pm,” Omamuwasan told the panel, adding that they did not activate audio recording, as the cameras are used for traffic not security.

“We never, ever tampered with the surveillance camera until about 8pm, when it was tampered with and stopped recording.”

Omomuwa confirmed the cameras that were removed before the shooting were plate number recognition cameras “early in the day”. He said the other surveillance camera, a pan–tilt–zoom camera (PTZ camera) also exists and is still intact.

The LCC MD also disclosed they have three surveillance cameras: at the Lekki toll gate, one at Ikoyi and another at Chevron. The cameras are linked via network, controlled from Chevron.

This is coming after the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, said that “hoodlums” wearing military uniforms may be responsible for the Lekki shooting.
