Ongoing Chaos in Benin City, the Edo State Capital as prisoners in detention are breaking out, jumping fence following an early morning unrest caused by thugs that are said to have hijacked the ENDSARS Protest according to our source.

An eyewitness in Benin tells NewsDirect Monday that, “The thugs have broken into the Nigerian prisons at Benin Sapele road and are currently setting prisoner free”. – Mr Efosa Mudia

Mr Mudia who was on the phone with our correspondent and panting while speaking said, “They stormed the premises of the Sapele Road prisons, from what I can see where I am everyone is scampering for safety, but i saw a few of the prisoners jump out of the fence but i will provide more details to you”.

Calls put through to the spokesperson of the Nigerian Prisons Service were not responded to as at the time of filling this report but we shall be updating our readers about the situation in Benin City.

According to Prison Insider, “At least three-quarters of Nigeria’s total prison population are inmates serving time without being sentenced, the Nigerian Correctional Service had said. – The head of the agency, Ja’afaru Ahmed was quoted to have said, 51,983 inmates are awaiting trial out of the prison’s total population of 73, 726 inmates. That is about 70 per cent of the total”.
