Anambra State Government is set to join the league of State governments that own and run football clubs with an announcement of the formation of Anambra Bombers FC, and Anambra Babes, 29 years after the creation of the State, Completesports.com reports.
Amid the confusion that trailed the State FA’s election recently and the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, to cancel the electoral process, the Caretaker Committee that was set up by the NFF to administer the FA visited Governor Willy Obiano.
During the courtesy call at Government Lodge, Onitsha, the State’s Chief Executive Officer gleefully announced the setting up of Anambra Bombers FC and Anambra Babes FC.
Gov. Obiano congratulated the newly inaugurated Anambra State FA Caretaker Committee headed by Dr Emeka Okeke, the son of transport mogul, Chief GUO Okeke.
Dr Okeke is the Proprietor of Aspire Football Academy which won the 2020 Anambra FA Cup.
The Caretaker Committee has Sir Victor Nwangwu, a former Rangers player and retired Secretary of Anambra State Football Association as Vice Chairman.
Governor Obiano assured the committee of the State Government’s support.
He charged the Committee to ensure that football lovers, and youths in the state who are interested in playing football are carried along.
Responding, Dr Emeka Okeke unveiled the Committee’s agenda tilted ‘Project Elevate Anambra Football’.
He said that the agenda was targeted at developing grassroots football in Anambra State.
While thanking the Governor for his support, and finding it worthy to also create a women football club in Anambra State (Anambra Babes), he informed the Governor that Anambra FA now has a befitting office complex that situates at Udoka Housing Estate, Awka, and a brand new Bus, all donated by him to ensure a smooth sail in Anambra Football.
Okeke also informed the Governor that work will commence next week at Awka Township Stadium which was abandoned by the past administration.
Sir Victor Nwangwu, in his vote of thanks commended Governor Obiano for his warm reception, and assured him that the newly inaugurated Caretaker Committee will rewrite football stories in Anambra State.
He further pleaded with the Governor to continue supporting football, and sports activities in Anambra State.
Sir Nwangwu ended his vote of thanks with prayers, that God will continue to protect and bless Governor Obiano.
Meanwhile, it has emerged that the process of election into the board and local Council Area FAs in State will start afresh.
Complete Sports was reliably informed that the Caretaker Committee set up by NFF to administer the State’s football for three months following the botched polls last week is contemplating calling for a fresh start to the entire process.
“We are going to first take a holistic look at the initial process,” one of the members of the stopgap committee told Complete Sports.
“There have been talks of people who purchased forms in the earlier process, but were wrongfully ‘screened out’ following allegations that the board wanted to return themselves.
“We will take a look at these and other allegations and misgivings. And if there are protests or petitions in this direction and they are equally proved, then, we start the process anew.”
