Ihlas Bebou’s goal with two minutes remaining in the first half secured the win for Hoffenheim.
The game was Awoniyi’s 10th Bundesliga game for Mainz since his loan move from Liverpool.

With the defeat Mainz are now 16th on 28 points and currently occupy the relegation play-off spot.
Also, Mainz remain winless in their last seven games (three defeats, four draws).
At the Olympiastadio Berlin, Hertha Berlin beat visiting Augsburg 2-0 with Noah-Joel Sarenren-Bazee in action.
Sarenren-Bazee was on from the start before making way with nine minutes left in the game.
Hertha Berlin opened scoring in the 23rd minute through Javairo Dilrosun before Krzysztof Piatek doubled their lead on 90 minutes.
Augsburg are 14th on 31 points in the 18-team league table.
In other Bundesliga games, Schalke 04 lost 1-0 at home to Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt beat Wolfsburg 2-1 at home.
League leaders Bayern Munich could stretch their lead at the top if they beat Fortuna Dusseldorf at the Alianz Arena.
