Former Nigeria winger, Emmanuel Amuneke, has been grieving over the death of Chidi Offor-Okenwa who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, May 6, 2020 at the age of 50.
Amuneke spoke to Completesports.com from Egypt where he currently works as Sporting Director of Misr El Makkasa, an Egyptian Premier League side.
The 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner as the Golden Eaglets coach, and former Tanzania National Team manager laments the death of the NFF Executive Committee member, describing Offor-Okenwa as a ‘fine gentleman’.
“It is sad that he’s gone, God knows the best because as humans, we cannot question God,” Amuneke said.
“May his soul rest in peace. I also pray God to give his family, the football family, the fortitude to bear this sad loss,”
The former African Player of the Year and 1994 AFCON winner with Super Eagles recalls his last moment with the late Offor-Okenwa.
“When I met him last, sure that was in 2019, in Niger Republic, during the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
“I was working with CAF as member of the Technical Study Group, TSG. when I saw him, though initially, I didn’t recognise him with his white bears, just like NFF president Amaju Melvin-Pinnick and Dr Sanusi Mohammed, NFF General Secretary.
“When I properly recognised, I went to greet him, saying, ‘my Oga’. It’s sad he’s gone. We will surely miss him,” Amuneke stressed, emotionally.
