‘Why South Africa 2010 Is My Best FIFA World Cup’ –Gyan

Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan, has been reliving the fun of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, describing it as his best in the history of the world’s biggest football showpiece.

Gyan scored three goals in five games at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Ghana reached the quarter-finals where they were ousted by Uruguay 4-2 on penalties after the normal play ended 1-1 at Soccer City, Johannesburg on July 2, 2010.

The Black Stars are set to take part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after missing the 2018 edition in Russia.

Gyan had earlier told BBC about his intention of returning from retirement to feature for the Black Stars at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. If it happens, it will be the former Udinese, Rennes, and Sunderland striker’s fourth FIFA World Cup following his 2006, 2010, and 2014 appearances.

“Anything can happen, it has happened before in 1994, when Roger Milla came out of retirement to play in the World Cup,” Gyan said.

Former Ghana FA chairman, Dr. Nyaho-Tamkloe supported Gyan’s decision.

“He is a good footballer and if he has the stamina, why not? Roger Milla opted to play in the World Cup at old age and did well,” Tamakloe told Ghanaweb.com.

However, in an interview with Citi Sports Online Ghana assistant coach George Boateng disclosed that Gyan hadn’t been contacted.

“We haven’t spoken to Gyan yet, so we will not disclose anything until we have spoken to the player himself,” Boateng remarked.

Gyan described the 2010 tournament as the greatest World Cup he had ever witnessed.

“I think 2010 World Cup was the best World Cup for me,” Joy News quoted Gyan as saying.

“It’s the most organised World Cup. Everything was fun because it was in Africa for the first time. People wanted to see what Africans can do, people had to fly all over the world to Africa.

“It brought people together. The organisation was excellent and you could see the real culture. Everything was amazing, for me it was the greatest World Cup I have ever seen.”

Gyan scored 51 goals in 109 games for the Black Stars of Ghana.

Ghana are in Group H of the 2022 FIFA World Cup along with Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea.

The Black Stars have qualified for the FIFA World Cup four times; Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Qatar 2022.
