Guardiola Misses Out As Klopp, Lampard Make EPL’s Manager Of The Season Shortlist
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was overlooked for selection as Jurgen Klopp and Frank Lampard were nominated for the 2019/2020 Premier League’s Manager of the Season award.
The four-man nomination which also has Sheffield United’s manager Chris Wilder and Brendan Rodgers of Leicester City, was announced on the Premier League’s official website on Friday.
Klopp delivered Liverpool’s first-ever Premier League title in some style, with the Reds becoming the first team to cement top spot with seven matches to spare.
Klopp’s five Barclays Manager of the Month awards in 2019/20 established another new high in the competition, while his side equalled other records by winning 18 matches in a row, securing 32 victories overall and amassing 55 points from a possible 57 at home.
Chelsea manager, Lampard, secured a top-four finish in his first season as a Premier League head coach.
The 42-year-old promoted young talents such as Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham, also leading his side to the FA Cup final.
Rodgers secured Leicester City’s second-highest finish in the Premier League as the Foxes came fifth and qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
He oversaw an eight-match winning streak, while his side’s 9-0 triumph at Southampton was the biggest away win in the competition, and the joint-biggest victory overall.
And Wilder’s promoted side were fighting for European qualification rather than safety, picking up four points against each of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers en route to a ninth-placed finish.
The Blades let in just 39 goals on their return to the Premier League, the fewest by a promoted club in the competition’s history.
Fans have until 18:00 BST on Monday 10 August to choose their favourite for the Manager of the Season.
The votes from the public will be combined with those of a panel of football experts to decide the winner.
And for the Player of the Season award, Liverpool dominated the seven-man list as skipper Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Sadio Mane all make the cut.
Also nominated are Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, Jamie Vardy of Leicester City, Southampton striker Danny Ings and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.
