Governor Hope Uzodinma’s wife, Barr. Chioma Uzodinma, has revealed that her husband will sign the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) 2021 Bill into law soon.

She made the remarks in Owerri, the state capital, during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign this year.

Gender-based violence can take the form of physical, sexual, psychological, or economic violence, as well as harmful practices such as child marriage, she said. She was represented at the event by Chief Nkechi Ugwu, the Commissioner for Women Affairs.

The governor’s wife said, “this is a time to reflect on how gender-based violence is affecting our society and what we can do to end it.”

The law, according to Barrister Uzodinma, will protect everyone, especially girls and women, from all sorts of assault.

Hon. Uju Onwudiwe, a member of the Imo State House of Assembly representing the Njaba State Constituency, expressed optimism that the governor would sign the VAPP bill soon.

She stated that while VAPP is for everyone, it is particularly focused on violence against women and girls, and that the measure contains various provisions.
