Despite the presence of the National Identity Number, Abia Governor Okezie Ikpeazu inaugurated his state’s version of the system on Wednesday.

According to Onyebuchi Ememanka, his Chief Press Secretary, he was the first to join in the plan.

At the Governor’s Lodge in Aba for the official inauguration of ASSIN, Ikpeazu emphasized the value of data in governance and administration.

He stated that ASSIN would assist the administration of Abia in planning, resolving unemployment concerns in the state, demographic distribution of facilities and resources, and other areas.

According to Ikpeazu, the identity numbers will function as a pass that will direct residents’ interactions with the government.

He went on to say that the ASSIN would be required for school enrollment and other government transactions.

The governor stated that enrolling in the scheme, which has been made user-friendly enabling participants to register free of charge from the comfort of their homes, has become a civic responsibility of all Abia citizens.

Ikpeazu went on to say that he was looking forward to the state’s ministries, departments, and agencies digitizing their operations.

He predicted that once ASSIN is fully operating, it will be difficult for federal officials to get paid without it.

Dr. Nnenna Chikezie, the Abia State Planning Commission’s Permanent Secretary and Executive Secretary, defined the ASSIN as an identity management platform that would capture users’ biometrics.

She further stated that Abians living abroad might join the scheme by utilizing an internet-enabled Android phone.

He went on to say that the concept was long overdue because it was needed for planning purposes, as well as recording the state’s developmental progress.

The ASSIN would be the identification for anyone requesting services from the Abia government, according to Chikezie, who added that two million Abia inhabitants were targeted for capture and registration in the next 12 months.

She promised that information on the registration would be made public soon and thanked the governor for beginning the program.
