Joy Owoyele, a woman died after fasting for 10 days in the Isheri Olofin region, Lagos state.

On the tenth day of a 14-day fast, Owoyele collapsed at the Christ Apostolic Church, Ori-Oke Gbogunmi, aka Ajanpelenbe Mountain, on Pipeline Road, Isheri Olofin.

It was learned that Owoyele had sought divine guidance for her marital problems.

After Owoyele lost consciousness during the spiritual exercise, she was rushed to the Igando General Hospital for treatment, according to the resident pastor, Alfred Sunday, who added that she died in the process.

“She came for prayers and nothing more,” Sunday said. We had a vigil the night before the incident, and she was fine. Her fasting was expected to last 14 days, but it was only the tenth day when the incident occurred. There is nothing secret here, as God is my witness.

“During the spiritual exercise, her daughter, Oluwatise, was also with her in the church, and they often slept together. Around 7 a.m., the incident occurred. When one of the church members told me that she had passed out, I was praying on the altar.

“As I got closer to evaluate her, I noticed she couldn’t stand up, and when I called her name, she only responded faintly. We were forced to rush her to Igando General Hospital for treatment, but she died.”

The pastor said that he went to the Idimu Police Station to report the incident, and that the police arrested him and the church’s General Overseer during the investigation.

“When I reported the incident, the police took my statement as well as the victim’s daughter’s,” he said. The General Overseer and I, on the other hand, were held for three days, and the police were also called to the church to conduct an inquiry.

“However, the family refused to press charges, and we were released following a police investigation. I immediately met with the woman’s family after the incident, and they recognized what had occurred as fate.

“She fasted and prayed during the spiritual practice, and she normally broke her fast with honey and wine. However, on the tenth day, she became extremely weak, and we were forced to rush her to the hospital in an attempt to save her, but she died.

“Following the incident, we now need everyone fasting and praying in the church to break their fast with pap rather than the honey and water we normally use. Anyone who declines will be barred from participating in the church’s spiritual exercises.”

Further investigation revealed that the victim’s family was planning to transport her body from the Yaba General Hospital mortuary to her hometown in Ekiti State for burial rites.

According to a source, Owoyele had been fasting and praying on her own about her broken marriage before turning to the church for spiritual support.

“The woman’s daughter said she was used to running from pillar to post in search of spiritual support so that her husband, who had deserted her and her daughter for seven years, could return,” the source said.

When contacted, Muyiwa Adejobi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, said Owoyele’s death was unexpected and unnatural, and that the investigation was still ongoing.

“On Saturday, April 24, 2021, at 11:50 a.m., one Alfred Sunday announced that on April 14, 2021, one Joy Owoyele, 30, came to his church, CAC Ori-Oke Gbogunmi, aka Ajanpelebe Mountain, in Isheri Olofin, for prayers,” Adejobi said.

“Owoyele fainted around 7 a.m. on the day of the incident and was rushed to Igando General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

“Detectives led by Inspector Bridget Edosa arrived at the scene, examined the body, and took it to the Yaba General Hospital morgue for autopsy. The case is being looked into.”
