As reported by Het Laaste Niuews, the Smurfs were subjected to a Covid-19 test in the build-up to Thursday’s pre-season game against Eendracht Termien with only the Nigerian testing positive.
“In the run-up to the first exhibition game of the season, the entire Genk group was tested yesterday (Tuesday),” a report on the Belgian website hln.be stated.
“Everyone tested negative except Onuachu.”
Onuachu becomes the second Nigerian footballer to contract the virus after Akpan Udoh, the first footballer to be infected, in February.
The 26-year-old who made his Super Eagles debut last year had only recently returned to his Belgian club for pre-season after he accompanied Victor Osimhen for his father’s burial in Nigeria.
Onuachu will now miss Genk’s first exhibition game of the season against Eendracht Termien on Thursday, July 9, as he will be quarantined for a week.
Onuachu joined Genk from Danish club FC Midtjylland in August 2019. He made his Super Eagles debut against Egypt in a friendly and has now featured six times for the three-time African champions.
Also, he was part of Rohr’s squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
