In those infamy days,
When frantic dusk fell
On the faces of your skies,
Africa, I were the lamp-lights you held
Tottering on the blood-shed roads
Again, when your gods roared
And breathed the winds of inferno
In their wooden cages,
Africa, my bloods you flood
To quench their rages
Africa, my Africa!
On the soil of your infanticide,
The happiness of birth wailed
And the joy of motherhood
Became a chorus in the hymn of sorrow
The symbol of prestige
Waved Mama Africa in a rugged flag
She tossed and danced
Here and yonder
To the frenetic drum of agony
Thanks be to Mary Slessor,
Who unsealed the mask of darkness
From the eyes of Africa
And the troubling leaves of twin-pregnancy
Drop on the calming sea of
Africa, my Africa!
Your ancestral chains hold my legs
My head and my whole
