In the heat of the military era when the then government sought to curtail the independence of the media. This eminent media woman dared where eagles feared to thread. It landed her in prison; she was sentenced life imprisonment in 1995 for the publication of an article about n attempted coup. Though locked up, her spirit for the media was still soaring. Her sentence was later commuted to 15 years. But after the death of the tyrant rule of Abacha in 1998 she was released. Anyanwu had her debut while working for Nigerian television authority as a petrol and energy correspondent. He had also been a commissioner in Imo State.
Anyanwu has been awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Award in 1998. She was also honoured by the International Women's Media Foundation with Courage in Journalism Award.In 1995(while in prison) she was awarded the Reporters sans FrontiŠres-Fondation de France annual prize. Which Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka received on her behalf.She is the founder and publisher of The Sunday Magazine, an investigative newsmagazine and has also produced documentaries for Nigerian television and two books on Nigerian politics.
