Celebrated Nigerian playwright, poet, social critic, teacher, actor and political activist is regarded by many as Africa’s greatest writer and one of the world’s most salient dramatists.
He was awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize for literature, the first African to be so honoured. The Swedish Academy described him as “one of the finest poetical playwrights that have written in English”. He holds an honorary doctorate of letters from Yale University, and is at present visiting professor in African-American studies at the prestigious Emory University in Atlanta, US, becoming only the second Nobel laureate to teach at Emory.
