VISION
To reduce the morbidity and mortality due to communicable diseases to the barest minimum, reverse the increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, meet global targets on the elimination and eradication of diseases, and significantly increase the life expectancy and quality of life of Nigerians.
MISSION
To develop and implement policies and programmes as well as undertake other necessary actions that will strengthen the national health system to be able to deliver effective to be able to deliver effective, efficient, quality and affordable health services that foster improved health status of Nigerians to serve as the engine for the pursuit of accelerated economic growth and sustained development

FUNCTIONS
Ensuring the development of National Health Policy and its implementation through supervision monitoring and inspection:
Ensuring the implementation of National Health Policy in so far as it relates to the Federal Ministry:
Issuance of guidelines for the implementation of National Health Policy:
Liaising with national health departments in other countries and with international agencies:
Issuing, and promoting adherence to, norms and standards, and providing guidelines on health matters, and any other matter that affects the health status of people, promoting adherence to norms and standards for the training of human resources for health:
Promoting adherence to norms and standards for the training of human resources for health:
Ensuring the continuous monitoring, evaluation and analysis of health
Status and performance of all aspects of the National Health System, through systematic collection and use of health information and evidence:
Identifying health goals and priorities for the national as a whole and monitor the progress of their implementation:
Coordinating health and medical services delivery during national disasters:
Participating in inter-sectoral and inter-ministerial collaboration:
Promoting health and healthy lifestyles:
Conducting and facilitating health systems research in the planning, evaluation and management of health systems research in the planning, evaluation and management of health services:
Facilitating and promoting the provision of health services for the management, prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases:
Ensuring the provision of tertiary and specialized hospital services:
Facilitating and promoting the provision of health services at the ports of entry and exit;
Coordinating health services rendered by the Federal Ministry of Health states, local government, wards private health care providers and Development partners and provide such additional health services as may be necessary to establish a comprehensive national health system:
Determining the minimum indicators required to monitor the status and use of resources and services;
Preparing strategic, medium-term health and human resources plans for the implementation its duties:
Organizing the National Council on Health to create a forum for integrating all health plans of the Federal and state Ministries of Health and building consensus on national health issues; and
Providing assistance to state Ministries of Health in the development of state health plans, technical materials, including methodologies, policies and standards and other technical assistance as may be necessary in order for the State Ministries to properly perform their functions.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF FEDERAL MINISTRY OF HEALTH FROM SEPTEMBER, 2004 TO DATE
The Ministry has successfully resolved the controversySurrounding the Polio Immunization. All the States are nowcarrying out routine Immunization throughout the country.
The Federal Government, through the efforts of the Honourable Minister of Health and Hon. Minister of State for Health released the sum of N7.9 billion for the payment of the shortfalls in 2004 Personnel Budget for workers in Health Institutions. The shortfalls had been paid to the Health Workers, and the Workers have gone back to work. Thus, ending the three months Doctor's strike.
To strengthen the National Health System, the Federal Ministry of Health have 3 documents to work with:-
- National Health Policy
- National Health Bill
- Health Sector Reform Programme which is to work
With the 7 Thrusts of the Health Sector Reform Agenda to
Achieve the NEEDS and MDGs targets.
Revitalization of the eight Teaching Hospitals is on course,
Government is turning them into centers of excellence.
Government through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) established over 200 Model Health Care Centers all over the country.
The Government has success fully worked out the Public/Private partnership collaboration of all the stakeholders in the Health Sector. Public and Private Sectors are now working with Government to achieve the Mission and Vision of the Federal Ministry of Health.
Review of the Malaria Treatment Drug Policy has also been embarked upon by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Federal Ministry of Health has acquired the Ebute-Metta Railway Hospital. The south West Zone into a Federal Medical Centre of excellence.
Federal Ministry of Health, through the assistance of theWorld Bank, is actively implementing the Six MDGs Health related goals with particular reference to improved Maternal Health and reduction of Child Mortality.
