VISION


To play a decisive role in the diversification of the resource base of the economy by promoting trade and investment with special emphasis on increased production and export of non-oil and gas products that will lead to wealth and job creation, poverty reduction and ensure enhanced service delivery in a manner that will stimulate the growth of the domestic economy for self-reliance and export and its integration into the global market taking full advantage of globalization.

SCHEDULE OF DUTIES



  • Provide a conducive atmosphere for the promotion of trade and investment;
  • Amplify, remodel and reposition the commerce sector in the nation's economy ;
  • Champion the increased production and export of non-oil and gas products;
  • Attract domestic and foreign investments to facilitate creation of jobs and wealth and reduction of poverty
  • Stimulate the growth of the economy through the use of appropriate user friendly legislations and incentives; and
  • Encourage efficiency by means of effective service delivery, fairness, justice and equity.
  • Provide quality and expeditious service in the commerce sector of the economy through the effective utilization of information technology.
  • Initiate, monitor and encourage measures that would improve the performance of the country in the non-oil and gas export sector by encouraging and assisting commodity associations in Nigeria for example; National Cotton Association; Cassava Growers Association of Nigeria; Cashew Association of Nigeria; Poultry Association of Nigeria and Cocoa Association of Nigeria; etc.
  • Coordinate actions that will safeguard Nigeria's interest in the international organizations of which Nigeria is a member for example International Cocoa Organization (ICO), International Sugar Organization (ISO), International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Cocoa Producers Alliance (COPAL), Inter-African Coffee Organisation etc. as well as supporting measures that would improve the country's non-oil and gas foreign exchange earnings;
  • Encourage trade at the international level and in particular amongst African States based on the concept of National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy [NEEDS] and within the framework of ECOWAS, AU and NEPAD;
  • Administer, regulate and supervise the formation and winding up of companies and allied matters;
  • Administer, promote, advance and shape public policy on industrial and intellectual property rights and to encourage innovation, support investment and sustain economic growth;
  • Seek ways and means of eliminating trade malpractices, money laundering and addressing abuses involving weights, standards or measures, dumping activities and monopolies;
  • Encourage the establishment of free zones, grant licenses, approvals, permits and incentives related to the operations of the zones;
  • Ensure that consumers' interests receive due consideration at appropriate forum and provide redress to obnoxious practices or the unscrupulous exploitation of consumers by Companies, Firms, Trade Associations and individuals;
  • Encourage the development and utilization of Accounting standards in Nigeria in order to ensure uniform format and content of financial reports;
  • Ensure that Nigeria meets her obligations in all related international treaties or conventions to which Nigeria is a party; for example World Trade Organisation (WTO), World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), The Trade Related Aspect of Intellectual Property Agreement (TRIPS), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);
  • Establish a Commodity Exchange that would provide a veritable platform for the growth and development of the non-oil and gas sector of the national economy, through the provision of a transparent and globally accessible trading facility, that would guarantee appropriate pricing for Agricultural produce and Solid Mineral products;
  • Organize, from time to time sensitization campaigns, Trade Fairs and other forms of activities and publicity that will lead to greater public awareness of the importance of the Ministry and its mandate;
