But because of their constant quarrel, the younger wife was asked to stay away from the home to give her husband time to think of a way out of the mess.
An agreement was reached that he should partition his house so that the two wives could have separate apartments. He had done this after the bride had stayed away for four months and was putting finishing touches to the apartment for her to return that fateful Thursday when the incident occurred.
According to the husband, that evening he came back to the house to tell his wife about the death of his sister. He saw her boiling water in the bedroom which was very unusual.
Seeing that it was already late to prepare dinner, he told his wife not to bother to cook and gave her N200 to buy bread so that they all could take tea before going to bed.
Rather than receive the money from him, she asked if he was only able to give her N200. She added sarcastically that he did not have money to give her because he had spent the money he had to purchase carpet and curtains for the bride's apartment.
In order not to start another row, he dropped the money, left the room and went to a barber's shop.
The barber was about leaving the shop when he got there and he urged him to wait for him for about five minutes. But being unable to wait, he left the shop and headed home.
As he was about entering his wife's room, he heard her talking to a friend and saying: 'That stupid idiot must have purchased those things."
He now asked, 'Am I the stupid idiot?" She said 'Yes" and immediately jumped to her feet. That gave him the signal that something unusual was about to happen.
He said he asked her to shut up and she held him by the neck, tore the tee-shirt he was wearing.
Before he knew what was happening, she had picked the bucket of water that she was boiling and poured it on him.
The 45 year old man who is still lying at the Our Lady of Apostle Hospital in Jos, said six days after the incident, he was unable to lie on his back and had to sit down even while sleeping. While pleading for anonymity for the three parties involved, he said he would want to protect the family name.
'I agreed to talk to you because I want other people to learn from our own mistakes. I could have died or probably it could have happened to the bride coming home that evening. So, I thank God that it was to me it happened and not to the poor girl."
The polo player said he is not making it a police case although, the police had wanted to step in.
On whether the couple would remain as husband and wife after he is discharged, he said he was in no position to decide now.
Efforts to get the wife's version of the incident proved abortive. Her father who spoke briefly to Daily Sun said what happened between the husband and wife on the day of this incident is only known to the two of them and their creator.
