Bola Ige: Police fail to parade drug baron, other suspects

THE Police, yesterday, failed to parade the drug baron and the suspects they said were the brain behind the assassination of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, citing the 'unavailability of some documentary evidence and vital materials" needed for the parade of the suspects.

ABUJA - THE Police, yesterday, failed to parade the drug baron and the suspects they said were the brain behind the assassination of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, citing the 'unavailability of some documentary evidence and vital materials" needed for the parade of the suspects.

Journalists, Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, AIGs and other senior officers of the rank of CPs had converged on the Conference Room of the IGP as early as 11 a.m., the time announced by Force Public Relations Officer, CP Haz Iwendi, for the parade of the suspects.

After waiting for one and half hours, four persons thought to be the suspects were marched into the conference room and asked to sit on the floor, giving everyone the impression that the IG, Mr. Sunday Ehindero would shortly begin the briefing. This was not to be, as the waiting continued for almost another hour.

Sensing that journalists were becoming restless and agitated as a result of the long wait, the Deputy Inspector General ‘C', Mr Mike Okiro, stood up at about 1. 30 p.m. and announced to journalists that the parade of the suspects had been shifted to enable the police team that went to bring some vital documents and materials arrive before the briefing could hold. The four persons were then marched out.
Iwendi added that whenever the materials arrived, the IG would get across to the media for the briefing and parade.

Mr Ehindero said, Tuesday, that the drug baron who masterminded the assassination of the late Attorney-General of Justice, Chief Ige, was in police detention, pointing out that he planned and sponsored the execution of Chief Ige from prison to pervert the course of justice.

Ehindero who spoke during a valedictory press conference in Abuja said: 'Our investigations revealed that the drug baron was behind the importation of 13 containers of hard drugs into the country which were intercepted and arrested by security agencies.

'The matter was then reported and investigations commenced into the matter with all fingers pointing at the baron. The baron who felt he was above the law, made several entreaties to Chief Ige whose office was supervising the investigation, with a view that he (Ige) call off the investigation.
'The former Attorney-General, however, went on with the investigations and the baron was found guilty and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.

'It was from the prison that the drug baron masterminded the plot to have Chief Ige eliminated. He used suspects which we have caught and they have confessed the various roles they played in the assassination," the IG had said.
