6 journalists perish in auto accident


Six journalists in the convoy of Plateau State Governor, Chief Joshua Dariye lost their lives in a fatal motor accident on Wednesday.The six were on the entourage of the governor to cover the commissioning of some projects when the accident occurred along the Langtang-Shendam Road. The driver also died.

The driver also died.

Eyewitness accounts said the journalists were traveling in a government-owned 13-seater bus when one of the front tyres burst in motion, causing the vehicle to somersault.

Three of the journalists whose identities are to be formally released by the Plateau State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) died instantly while three others including a female died at the Shendam general hospital.

A few others suffered injuries and are receiving treatment at the hospital.
On hearing of the accident, Secretary to Plateau State Government, Mr. John Gobak immediately dispatched ambulances from Jos to Shendam to evacuate the victims.
The corpses of the deceased journalists were later driven to Jos and deposited at the Airforce Military Hospital.

State Chairman of the NUJ, Mr. John Tsok, Secretary, Mr Stephen Kwande and Mr. Isaac Shobayo, chairman of the Correspondents Chapel which lost five members, were among journalists and other sympathizers who received the corpses.
Many journalists wept uncontrollably at the news of the deceased colleagues.
