A multiple motor accident which took place yesterday evening around Elele-Port Harcourt road in Rivers State resulted in at least 50 persons being roasted to death in the ensuing inferno from the crash.
A multiple motor accident which took place yesterday evening around Elele-Port Harcourt road in Rivers State resulted in at least 50 persons being roasted to death in the ensuing inferno from the crash.
The accident which occurred about 7pm, according to eyewitness accounts left all the passengers in the three vehicles that collided burnt beyond recognition while the immediate cause of the accident was not known.
However, a passenger in another vehicle coming behind the accidented buses said two of the vehicles were heading towards Owerri while the third bus was heading towards Port Harcourt.
The collision was said to have caused a loud explosion which reverberated miles away and ignited the fire which drew people to the spot but they could do nothing due to the heat of the fire that resulted.
Passengers who tried to escape from the collided vehicles could not open the doors of the buses as they had jammed and most of them were then roasted at the doors of the vehicles
'Smoke was everywhere when we stopped to see what was happening and the bodies were strewn on the road. People from a nearby community were rushing to the scene to see what had happened", an eyewitness narrated.
Although the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Rivers State , Mr. Sobowale Oke confirmed the accident, he however did not state the official number of casualties, but promised to give details later.
As at the time of filing this report, the corpses of the victims had been deposited at various mortuaries in Port Harcourt.
