Police probe suspected robbery attack on presidential aide's family

The Kwara State police command has begun investigations into the suspected robbery attack last weekend on the Ilorin residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Gen. Mohammed Abdullahi.

The Kwara State police command has begun investigations into the suspected robbery attack last weekend on the Ilorin residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Gen. Mohammed Abdullahi.

The attack on Abdullahi's bungalow building, at Tanke Ilorin, left a man described as an officer of the State Security Service (SSS) dead, while another person identified as Abdullahi's son (Shittu) was shot on the chest.

According to the state police spokesman Gideon Makus, a Deputy Superintendent, "all I will say for now is that we are investigating. But we are assuring everybody that we shall surely get to the root of the unfortunate incident.'

Sources told The Guardian that the incident occurred at about 7.30p.m. when the gun-wielding suspects broke into the house and shot the SSS officer and Shittu. It was unclear whether the shooting was due to any attempt by the duo to resist the invaders.

Besides, nobody was willing to confirm whether or not any property was stolen from the house.

Sources at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin said that Shittu was rushed into the accident and emergency wing of the hospital, at about 7:57p.m.

A cardio-thoraxic doctor at the hospital described Shittu's condition as critical before the admission but added that he was eventually stabilized.

"He was shot on the chest, if I may use a lay man's diction. The spot was bad. But now I can assure you that his condition is very encouraging," he added.

Shittu was said to have been operated upon immediately on admission and taken to a newly built ward in the hospital christened "Five star ward."

Chief Medical Director, UITH, Dr Suleiman Kuranga, was said to have led a team of other surgeons who performed the operation.

Reacting to media enquiries, Kuranga said: "I can confirm to you that his (Shittu's) condition is now very alright."

A family source who spoke under anonymity however said that Shittu had been flown to Abuja for proper medical attention.

The family source added that the suspected robbers did not remove anything from the house.
