An explosion rocked a popular hotel in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Council, Delta State, on Sunday night.

The number of casualties in the incident, which occurred at 7.15pm, could not be ascertained as at press time. Policemen from the Delta State Police Command, who arrived on the scene shortly after the incident, cordoned off the area.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that some explosive items went off in one of the rooms in the hotel, killing all the occupants whose identities were yet to be ascertained officially as at 9.15pm on Sunday.

The incident instantly threw the management of the hotel and security agencies into confusion.

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Ekpan Police Station, Mr. Tony Ekong, a Chief Supertendent of Police, led policemen to the scene. The team cordoned off the hotel, especially the area affected by the blast.

No corpse had been retrieved nor injured persons rescued from the scene as at 9.15pm on Sunday night.

A vehicle belonging to the Delta State Fire Service was stationed at the hotel, apparently to contain a possible fire outbreak.

Two weeks ago, a similar explosion occurred at Piniki Close in Ekpan, where some top officials of Delta State Government reside and where the residence of a member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Mercy Alumona-Isie, is located.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Police Command, Mr. Hezekiah Dimka, confirmed the incident. He said details were still sketchy.

Dimka however confirmed that one person was killed in the incident. Independent investigation carried out by our correspondent revealed the name of the deceased as Adamu, who arrived Warri from Kano in the early hours of Sunday.
