Aviation reforms: 1000 parastatal workers to lose jobs

No fewer than 1000 workers of the parastatals in the Aviation Ministry will be thrown into the saturated job market from today as part of the reforms of the government.

Sources at the Ministry of Air Transportation told Daily Sun that the Ministry itself will strictly monitor the retrenchment exercise which will be done in phases.

The sack, which is the third in the space of 12 months, will commence with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). Others to follow thereafter are the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Skypower Aviation Handling Company Ltd (SAHCOL).

As news of the sack filtered into the parastatals, majority of the FAAN staff wore sullen faces as they await for the worst to come. He however noted that what was delaying SAHCOL from carrying out the exercise was lack of funds to pay those who will be affected their entitlements. Aviation experts have described the incessant sack as punitive since those at the top have ways of bringing their own candidates whether they are relevant in the sector or not.
Over 2000 persons have been sacked in FAAN in the last one year.
