Victims of a motor accident in Maryland area of Lagos, involving a Mazda bus have recounted their ordeals to Daily Sun.
The early morning accident was said to have claimed the life of a newspaper agent, simply identified as Alfa Olalekan, while six persons were said to be seriously injured. Among those injured were, Peter, Abbey, Friday and Abiodun Mustapha.
Friday is said to have sustained serious stomach injuries, which makes it difficult for him to pass out urine. He is said to be lying critically ill at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The victims, mainly newspaper vendors, who described their escape as miracle, said many of them would have lost their lives if not for providence.
Mustapha, who said he was hit by the vehicle explained that he was sorting out newspapers before some people started shouting that a bus had lost control.
'Before I realized what was happening, the vehicle had hit me. I found myself on the other side of the road. I became unconscious. Later, I regained consciousness, only to discover that one of our colleagues had been killed by the driver," he said.
He said the driver of the bus, which was coming from Ikeja, was on high speed, making it possible for him to lose control.
He regretted that Olalekan, who was with him few minutes earlier was confirmed dead after he was rushed to the LASUTH.
The 35-year-old man said: 'I will never forget today throughout my life."
An eyewitness, Femi Martins, described it as a black Monday for the vendors in Maryland.
Martins said Olalekan, who distributed newspapers to vendors in Ketu area of Lagos, had already taken delivery of some newspapers and was waiting to take delivery of two other national newspapers before the ugly incident.
